Explore the Zilker Metropolitan Park
Zilker Park is a 351-acre urban park. The park features botanical gardens, nature trails, sports fields and courts, picnic areas, and a playground. The Zilker Eagle, a miniature train, opens in 2022. The new train is replacing the beloved Zilker Zephyr, and will offer rides around the park! The park is also home to Barton Springs Pool, a three-acre pool fed from underground springs. Pack up a few sandwiches, some fruit, and maybe a Frisbee or two, and head to Zilker for an afternoon of relaxation and family time.
If you’re looking for a fun, low-key activity to do with your kids, take them for a walk around Zilker Park. Just simply walking around and exploring is a lot of fun.
Visit the Texas State Capitol Building
The Texas State Capitol Building is a cool place to visit with your kids. You can learn about the history of Texas and see the government in action. There are also tours available if you want to learn more about the building and its history. And be sure to check out the beautiful rotunda! (Tip- there are scavenger hunts, maps, and activity books at the entrance!)
The outside grounds are also huge and gorgeous, home to the African American History memorial and the volunteer fireman statue. Be sure to visit in the evening as well. The lights on the building and paths make for a magical experience.
Go Shopping on South Congress
South Congress has a very unique vibe that is a mix of laid-back and eclectic. The restaurants and bars are mostly casual, and there are a lot of cool shops and galleries. It’s a great place to people watch, and you can always find something interesting going on. It is a great place to take your kids for a day of shopping. You’ll find everything from souvenir shops to high-end boutiques, and there are plenty of food and entertainment options too.
Grab a bite at the Green Mesquite BBQ
If you’re looking for a great place to take your kids for some barbecue in Austin, check out the Green Mesquite BBQ. They have a wide variety of meats to choose from, as well as sides and desserts. They have brisket, ribs, pulled pork, turkey legs, sausage links, and more. The restaurant has some indoor seating. However, be sure to check out the big yard with tables for people to eat outside and enjoy the beautiful Texas weather.

Round Rock Donuts is a donut shop located in Round Rock, Texas. It is super yummy but it is known for its Texas-sized donuts, which are more than 3x the size of most other donuts. The shop offers a variety of flavors on regular-sized donuts. Their Texas-sized donut comes in glazed, chocolate glazed, or half and half.
