Any guesses where we are headed??
The list of reasons we travel with our children is infinite, but for many of us, it would all come back to the destination itself and the memories we create there. While we are busy exploring, broadening our horizons and diversifying our world views, sometimes we stumble upon completely wonderful and equally unexpected places.
These are our hidden gems… the places we soak up and yearn to go back to.
Our Hidden Gems series will uncover one-of-a-kind places discovered by our readers while traveling or exploring their own city. Whether it’s a beach, park, cafe, family-friendly hotel, hiking trail or other, enjoy these best kept secrets and be sure to add them to your list of places to go!
Nguyen Shack
Location: Ong Tim Bridge, Thanh My Area, Thuong Thanh Ward, Cai Rang District, Cần Thơ, Vietnam
Discovered by: Melissa, a mother from Australia, discovered this stay after scouring accommodation recommendations on TripAdvisor.
Why We Love It: These rustic bungalows situated along the Mekong Delta waterways are such a great base to experience the local villages in Vietnam. Whilst it is rustic and simple, it has all the modern amenities needed for a great family getaway. Your family will get to enjoy plenty of fresh air and nature views.
Why It’s Kid-Friendly: There are a variety of animals for the kids to play with. The staff are young and love playing with the kids too. Just the overall set-up of the place–with swinging bridges over the waterways and accommodations in little individual rustic bungalows over the water–makes it fun for all. It is more of a giant playground than just a place to stay!
Tips & Important Details: Because of how the bungalows are situated over and near the waterway, this is far from a baby-proofed property. In my opinion, it is not suitable for small children and is best for kids probably ages 4+. Children old enough to walk themselves and heed your directions to stay safe will be far less stressful. You really don’t need to bring anything other than yourselves and your luggage. Once you arrive in Can Tho, get a taxi to the Nguyen Shack; it’s a 10 minute drive from town. More than anything… bring your sense of adventure and have fun!
Cost: Rates start around $90 AUD per night for a family of 4. Breakfast is included!
Kids are always hungry! Know anywhere to eat nearby?: This is a homestay in the village. They serve great local food and western food, both of which are very cheap. Otherwise, you can get a taxi into Can Tho to try out other local Vietnamese restaurants.
About Melissa: She is mum to one child, a six-year-old daughter, and lives in Brisbane, Australia when they’re not traveling. She runs the blog and website https://thriftyfamilytravels.com, which you can also follow on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/thriftyfamilytravels/?hl=en. Her dream travel destination as a family is to visit the Southeast Asian tropical islands.
